Reddish Egret

A very large bird with long legs and a long straight bill. When this bird feeds, he runs through the shallow water with very long strides, staggers sideways, leaps into the air, flaps a one wing sometimes both, then finally stabs at a fish! After all of this commotion you would think the fish would be long gone, but he manages to eat plenty. Sometimes they do hunt by standing very still and spreading out their wings so that it makes a shady area in the water for the small fish to shelter in and then its too late for the fish… These birds were hunted by plume hunters in the late 1800s to the point that there was only a small population left. Luckily they are coming back since they have been put under complete protection!
