Black-crowned Night-Heron
I spotted this one sitting on a nest down in below San Diego, California in the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge area. There were several of the Black-crowned Night-Herons nesting in this tree along with a few Yellow-crowned Night-Herons. They can be found in most states throughout the US, in freshwater streams, lakes, marshes and saltwater marshes. They usually roost in trees during the day and will forage at night. Breeds throughout most of southern Canada and the US, then they will spend their winters along most of the US coastline south down to South America.
