Can You See The Difference Between The Cedar Waxwing And The Bohemian Waxwing?

Above is a Cedar Waxwing, notice the narrow dark mask and throat, the yellow underside and short crest. They are found throughout the US, Canada and into Mexico.

Both species of Waxwings have crests and yellow on the tips of their tails.

Below are Bohemian Waxwings, they are larger and grayer with chestnut under-tail coverts and a yellow and white pattern on their wings. They are found mostly in Alaska and Canada, but occasionally wander down into Northern USA.

I found these cuties a few years ago while I was hiking through an apple orchard in New Hampshire, USA. I had looked up on the Audubon birding app to see what birds were in the area and someone had listed the Bohemian Waxwings. I was very excited, but doubtful that I would actually see them, since I have been birding in New England for many years and had never seen these birds!

So off I go to find this apple orchard, ends up being an orchard that had recently sold off all it’s lots for housing. Looked like the houses were to be built in the spring. I parked (hoping that the owner of the property would not show up), I looked and listened for quite awhile and the only birds I saw was a pair of American Kestrels. I sadly got back into my car and started to leave, but just before I pulled out onto the main road I saw a couple of birds fly into the apple trees deeper into the orchard on my right side. Slamming on the breaks, I jumped out of my car with my binoculars and I saw them on the tops of the trees. The Bohemian Waxwings!!!

I probably spent about an hour that day just standing there amongst the apple trees watching about 50 Bohemian Waxwings fluttering all around me! They were eating the fermented apples on the ground and getting a bit tipsy! I took hundreds of photos and just laughed at them getting drunk and playing around me without a care in the world (they didn’t even seem to notice that I was there only a couple of feet away)…

New lifer, good day 🙂
