If you are ever out hiking and you happen by a group of birders who are talking about seeing a Butterbutt…

No, they’re not talking about cooking a turkey, they are using the endearing nickname for the bird in the photo below.

It’s the Yellow-rumped Warbler. They can be found throughout all of Canada and the US down into Northern Mexico.

Most other Warblers will migrate to the tropics in the fall, but the Yellow-rumped will stay in the North living on berries.

  1. I just returned from the Okefenokee NWR in South Georgia and was amazed how many hundreds of Butter Butts were there. You could hear them chirping constantly in the brambles. And when you “pished”, they’d practically attack you!
